Financial Advisor, Financial Planner, Wealth Manager… none of these titles mean a single thing. In fact, anyone who wants to can use them. It’s quite common – every insurance salesman or broker you come across will likely operate under one those types of titles to try and give the illusion of credibility.

Your financial future is too important to risk falling victim to a smooth-talking salesperson. Be confident about who you are working with – look for:

  • Credentials. Seek out certifications that are recognized and respected, such as CFP® and CFA.
  • Independence. If they work for a national chain or insurance company, your best interest may not be the priority.
  • Experience. Not just years in the business, but how many clients have they actually guided through retirement? Building a plan is one thing, successfully bringing it to fruition is another.
  • Service & Support. Is it one adviser, or a team? Multiple support staff, or one/none? If the team is minimal and the adviser is focused on administrative work, how can they dedicate the necessary time to planning, education, and account management?
  • Fiduciary. A legal requirement to act in your best interest. Any adviser you work with should adhere to a fiduciary standard at all times (and be willing to put it in writing).
